Vacation Lodging with Kitchens Provide Big Savings

Traveling doesn't have to ruin your diet or your budget.

Budgeting for food expenditures during travel to any destination can be almost as difficult as forecasting the week's weather. When staying at a traditional hotel, the challenge is multiplied as travelers face the added expense of dining out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. While the majority of quality hotels may provide a coffee maker, they do not offer full kitchens. Professionally managed vacation rentals such as those of Century 21 Thomas in North Myrtle Beach, SC, allow guests to enjoy their favorite (and often healthier) meals and snacks, as each property provides a full kitchen stocked with clean utensils, pots, pans, plates and ample cabinet/refrigerator space for food storage.

"Our guests often comment that some of their best vacation memories are enjoying a 'Big Chill' dinner or a beachside backyard cookout at the home they have rented," explained Mike Harrell, Marketing Director for Century 21 Thomas Beach Vacations. "They love being able to dine on their own timetable and especially having the freedom to have a casual breakfast while still in their PJs."

Often costing less than a single hotel room, vacation rentals from Century 21 Thomas Beach Vacations and similar vacation rental management companies provide travelers an accommodations lifestyle unlike any other, with considerably more space (both for living and dining), amenities, guest services and privacy than other, more traditional lodging options. For answers to common questions, along with additional tips and tools for choosing a rental that fits travelers' needs and budgets, visit Discover Vacation Homes. For more information on individual beach vacation rentals in North Myrtle Beach, check out the selections at Century 21 Thomas Beach Vacations.

Dining on a Dime

The average daily cost for lunch at a full-service restaurant for a family of four is approximately $40.00; dinner prices can jump as much as $6/person totaling $64/day. As the majority of traditional hotels do not offer in-room kitchens or adequate amounts of pantry space, many families have no option other than to dine out for all three meals each day. Access to a full kitchen adds up to major savings for trips of any duration. Just consider; enjoying cereal for breakfast or sandwiches for lunch, rather than a full-scale restaurant meal, can save enough for additional fun activities, a nice night out, or more!

Sticking to a Healthy Living Meal Plan

While on vacation, travelers can easily consume more than 4,000 calories a day, translating into an average 5-pound weight gain for a one-week trip. With an in-home kitchen, vacation rental guests are no longer slaves to fast food or other high fat dining options, but are now back in control of their personal menu, allowing them to cook their food, shop for healthy snacks and accurately monitor their caloric intake.

Best Vacation Rates Available Now

According to a recent Wall Street Journal article by Sarah Nassauer...

For the past year or so, many travelers have become accustomed to seeing hotel and resort rates progressively plummet. Savvy consumers waited until the last minute to snatch the deepest discounts. But, now, industry watchers say hotels and resorts have unloaded their sweetest offers early and hotel prices are likely to stay relatively stable during the next few months. By the middle of next year, they may even start to inch up.
"I think we may have hit bottom," says Jan Freitag, vice president at Smith Travel Research. "There will still be deals permeating the general environment" in 2010, he says. "But they are not here to stay" throughout next year.

Barbee says the road is scheduled to be completed and open to traffic in early to mid-August. Mid-August is about the same time that the new Fantasy Harbour Bridge is scheduled to open. Construction of the Fantasy Harbour Bridge started almost two years ago, in July 2007. The Fantasy Harbour Bridge is just below the Highway 501/Highway 17 Bypass intersection near the Myrtle Beach International JetPort. World's Largest Inflatable Waterside

3-Story Inflatable Waterslide Now in North Myrtle Beach

The Beach Services Division for the City of North Myrtle Beach will be unveiling a new summer fun attraction in North Myrtle Beach… the world’s largest inflatable waterslide. The three-story inflatable waterslide will be set up on the beach between 1st and 2nd Avenues South in North Myrtle Beach and is scheduled to welcome its first riders on Friday.

“We are very eager and excited to be able to offer residents and visitors of North Myrtle Beach an exciting new attraction that will make lasting memories and help attract and retain visitors to our City,” said City of North Myrtle Beach Mayor Marilyn Hatley.

Dubbed “The Hippo” by the manufacturing company FreeStyle Slides, the slide is 36 feet tall, nearly 180 feet long and weighs in at 3,700 lbs. To get to the top, riders must climb one of two 60-step staircases, which come equipped with form-fitting handrails and non-slip grooves for a safe climb to the top. The most exciting part is that the wild ride to the bottom can be enjoyed by adults and children alike.

The world’s largest inflatable waterslide is scheduled to be inflated on the beach today and will be open to the public Friday and will operate beginning at 10 a.m. daily throughout the summer.

The waterslide is affordable for beachgoers at only $3 per ride or riders can purchase an all-day wristband for $20. Tickets and wristbands will be available for purchase at the city’s Ocean Park, which is located at 2nd Avenue South street end.

Bird Watching at the Beach

Coastal Bird Watching

If you enjoy birding as a favorite way to relax and bond with nature, come to the South Carolina beaches and visit some of the local hot birding spots. With just a little luck and sharp eyes, you’ll likely see a wide variety of birds soaring including the bald eagle, our national emblem, as well as hawks and ospreys. On my last trip along the Intracoastal Waterway, I was fortunate enough to see four eagles' nests - and one was occupied by a stately eagle!

Huntington Beach State Park, with its three miles of undeveloped beaches and pristine salt marshes, is home to more than 300 recorded species of birds. Long considered one of the best birding spots in South Carolina, Huntington Beach is particularly known for migratory birds that flock to our area for the warmer Carolina waters.

Grab your field glasses and camera for a stroll along the park’s causeways to search the freshwater lagoon and salt marsh to observe the marsh birds and waterfowl. Get a bird’s eye view of hundreds of bird species from the lighthouse at Hunting Island State Park. Colorful painted buntings, slender terns and white egrets all make the park their home. And birders can spot skimmers, tanagers, orioles, pelicans, oystercatchers and wood storks. Egrets and herons also can be found in abundance at this prime birding destination. ~ some information from SCPRT

MayFest on Main 2009

Fun for All at North Myrtle Beach's Street Party

This past Saturday, several thousand locals and visitors were in attendance for the annual MayFest on Main street party in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Main Street was open only for pedestrian traffic for the day and was lined with booths manned by all sorts of arts & crafts folks, specialty food vendors, and more. There were kids’ areas with lots of fun stuff for toddlers to teens, including rides on Bubba – an eight foot tall North African camel.

Live music was the biggest draw of the FREE EVENT with a long list of bands providing the entertainment. Headlining were Sixties Surf Musicians from the former Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, and others. Popular bands including Mother’s Finest, Chairmen of the Board, and Coco Loco played long and hard and had the crowd dancing in the street. Created to provide fun for all ages, the festival grows larger and larger each May. Be sure to include it in your plans for 2010.

Spring 2009 Motorcycle Rally

Harley-Davidson “Cruisin’ the Coast 2009”

Even though the City of Myrtle Beach passed additional rules geared toward eliminating the spring motorcycle rally, a large crowd of Harley-Davidson enthusiasts are present here in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Riders are congregating at the various vendor exhibits and event venues at Barefoot Landing and at Barefoot Commons in Windy Hill.

The atmosphere, so far, is a bit more subdued and the crowds not as large as recent years. This is due partly to the Myrtle Beach city agenda mostly to the general economic malaise. North Myrtle Beach city representatives say everything is business as usual and plan to regard the motorcycle rally attendees the same as other visitors. The Harley Rally kicked off this past Friday and will run through the next weekend.

New Kids Area at Freestyle Music Park

"Kids in America" at the Freestyle Park

Freestyle Music Park announced the addition of the new “Kids in America” section to the theme park in Myrtle Beach, SC. Four new kids’ rides will be featured including:

  • “Life is a Highway” – a track ride in which families ride in the cab of an 18-wheeler. Cabs will have two seats for children and two for adults so the whole family can enjoy the ride around the track together.
  • “Get Off of My Cloud” – eight colorful balloons with baskets for riders can accommodate up to four adults and kids and offer a spectacular view of the park.
  • “Fly Like an Eagle” – allows a child and an adult to enjoy the sensation of soaring through the clouds in a kite flyer over the kids’ area.
  • “Wheels in the Sky” – peddle through the clouds in festive hang glider cars, swooping and swooshing along.

The “Kids in America” area will be rounded out with a roller coaster, a play area, a rock wall, basketball court, and a performance venue with a new themed kids’ show.

As planned, the redesigned Freestyle Music Park will be much more family-oriented and kid-friendly than its predecessor. The targeted opening is still set for Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Myrtle Beach Area Wildfire

With regards to the forest fire situation in our area...

North Myrtle Beach (the ocean-side of the Intracoastal Waterway) and our vacation rental properties remain unaffected and our guests are enjoying the warm weather, golf, shopping, and entertainment venues. If you are planning on coming to visit the beach soon, recent events should not interfere.

The containment of the fire is improving and, currently, the weather is calm with a slight breeze from the ocean. The weather is subject to change, of course, but the forecast is just about perfect for visiting.

Below you will find five website links. Two are to local news sites, one is to the North Myrtle Beach Chamber, one is to the Horry County website, and one is to the City of North Myrtle beach. All five, on their home pages, have information regarding the current situation and some even contain maps and videos.

www.wpde.com - local news on WPDE
www.northmyrtlebeachchamber.com - North Myrtle Beach Chamber
www.horrycounty.org - Horry County government
www.n-myrtle-beach.sc.us/ - City of North Myrtle Beach

If you are visiting our area in the near future you may wish to pay special attention to road access and temporary road closings. Particularly;

1) Highway 90 (between Conway and North Myrtle Beach) is closed in certain sections.

2) Highway 31 (which parallels the Intracoastal Waterway) is closed from Highway 90 to Grissom Parkway (Myrtle Beach)

3) Highway 22 (between Conway and North Myrtle Beach) is closed between Highway 90 and the Beach

US Highways 9 and 501 into our area, Highway 17 and all other coastal roadways, and Myrtle Beach International Airport, are unaffected at this time. Traffic is typical for this type of year.

True to form, the response from our community of businesses and individuals has been phenomenal. Those that lost homes have been accommodated, we have pulled together, and we continue to reach are out with high spirits while we address the matters at hand.

Please do not hesitate to call or write if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Best regards,

Spring Safari 2009

The Shaggers are here and more are on the way!

The S.O.S. Spring Safari begins today and continues for the next ten days as one of the largest “adult” beach parties on the east coast. With the theme of the Year of Anniversaries, this one celebrates 25 years since the Shag was designated the official State Dance of South Carolina.

Clubs all along Main Street in the Ocean Drive section of North Myrtle Beach will be blasting dance music both live and spun by local DJs. Much of the action will be found at Fat Harold’s Beach Club, Duck’s and Duck’s, Too!, the O.D. Arcade, Pirate’s Cove and the O.D. Beach Resort. Popular bands such as Sea Cruz, the Craig Woolard Band, the Fabulous Kays, Tim Clark Band, and Coastline will be performing at 2001 Nightlife and other venues.

The biggest Spring Safari event is the parade on Main Street, kicking off from the Kroger parking lot at 1PM Saturday the 25th. More than 100 shag clubs with over 14,000 members will be represented.

All through the festival, the O.D. clubs will be playing beach music, having special cookouts and promotional events. There will be dance competitions, workshops and lessons for beginners to intermediates will be available. Ages will run the gamut from pre-teens to the vastly “more experienced”. It's a sure bet that they'll all have loads of fun.

New Amusement Park in North Myrtle Beach

More Family Fun in North Myrtle Beach

A new beachside amusement park near the Main Street horseshoe is in the works for North Myrtle Beach. The new park would feature a Ferris Wheel, Roller Coaster, and lots of fun rides for kids. Plans include a Swing Tower, Carousel, Tilt-a-Whirl, Gravitron, Fun Slide, Kiddie Train, Teacups, and more. Park admission would be free and visitors would be charged for tickets on a per ride basis.

Although not yet named, the amusement park will be somewhat reminiscent of the one that was so popular in the same location back in the 50’s and 60’s – the Ocean Drive Pavilion. Many of our long-time visitors will remember lots of fun times at the old park and this would give their kids and grandchildren an opportunity to create even more wonderful memories.

The park will mostly rely on vacationing families who are staying in local hotels, condos and beach houses. In addition to rides, the developers plan to include arcade games and food concessions. The park could open as early as August 1st and would probably be open only through early September in its initial year. It would be open for its first full season in 2010.

New Name, New Rates for Hard Rock Park

Freestyle Music Park - It's More than Hard Rock!

The word is out and it’s official. The former Hard Rock Park is now Myrtle Beach’s own Freestyle Music Park. This will open the way for a major re-branding of the amusement park and many of its rides.

Many of the rides and restaurants are being renamed and new themes are being introduced into the mix. Part of the evolution includes the inclusion of many other music genres – country, beach music, pop, reggae, alt-country, disco and more. Rock & Roll will always be a major ingredient.

The biggest and most positive changes are the revised rates. Ticket prices will be much more affordable - $39.95 for adults and $29.95 for children 3-9 with free admission for kids 2 and younger. Season passes have been reduced to a modest $74.95 for adults and $44.95 for children.

The revamped amusement park has a brand new website, too,

Vacation Rental FAQ

FAQ about your North Myrtle Beach vacation with Century 21 Thomas

How do I make a reservation?
Easy! Enter a few preferences – dates, number of bedrooms wanted, and any other items to narrow your search. Then choose a few of the homes, villas and/or condos you like best. Check their real-time availability online and book it while it’s available.

What does it cost to make the reservation?
Your initial payment equals ½ of the total rental plus any special services you include and the optional vacation insurance premium. When booking by telephone via our reservations staff, the payment is due within seven days by Visa, MasterCard or check (if received at least 30 days prior to arrival). When reserving online, this payment is due by Visa or MasterCard at the time of booking. Your balance is due in full at least one month prior to arrival.

Will I need to bring linens?
Guests have the option of bringing their own bed & bath linens or adding a convenient linen package. Each year, more guests are choosing to add bed & bath linens to their vacation rental.

The biggest downside to bringing your own linens? Sheets & pillowcases for all your beds and an ample supply of bath towels could take up as much room in your car as your luggage – coming AND going. Be sure to call us and add a convenient bed & bath linen package to your vacation rental.

What if I’ll be arriving late?
Our guest services/front desk is open until 5PM Monday through Saturday and from noon until 5PM Sundays. Late arrivals are not uncommon. If you will be arriving after 5PM, just call and let us know. If your balance has been paid, we’ll be happy to make arrangements for you to pick up keys. You will need to stop by our front desk the next morning to register.

When can I check in?
Check-in is at the office designated on your confirmation, beginning at 3:00 PM or as soon as the property has been cleaned, inspected, and deemed ready for occupancy. We may delay the check-in time for maintenance or special cleaning.

If you arrive before 3:00 PM, come by our office. We will take care of any paperwork and be happy to check the status of your accommodations. If your vacation rental is ready, we'll get you off to an early start for your beach holiday. Please be aware that some accommodations may not be ready until after 3PM.

When is check out?
Guests and their belongings must be out of the property by 10AM. We have a very short window of time in which properties must be cleaned and prepared for the arriving guests.

Where can I find more information about Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach?
Tons of information about the Myrtle Beach area’s
dining, entertainment, shopping, and attractions can be found on our website. Additionally, we have a regularly updated event calendar and “Fun Forecast” so you can see all the great stuff going on during your stay.
