May = FUN in North Myrtle Beach

Warm Days, Festivals, Fiestas and Fun...

Spring is well under way here at The Beach and May is shaping up to be a wonderful month for family trips, weekend getaways, and excellent deals on Myrtle Beach golf packages.

May's first weekend is a grand one with the 27th Annual Rivertown Music & Arts Festival in historic downtown Conway on May 4th. Festivities include the Chicora Classic Car show, the Farmers' Market, and performances by lots of young local talent - dancing, singing and more! The evening is topped off with a street concert featuring The Steady Hand String Band, The River Whyless (formerly Do It To Julia), and stellar mandolin-player Jenni Lyn Gardner & Friends. The festival is from 11 am to 9 pm and, as always, is a FREE family-friendly event.  Click for details and schedule.

Other music events this weekend include an encore appearance by the popular Oak Ridge Boys on stage at Barefoot Landing's Alabama Theatre. For the younger set, Band of Horses will be center stage in the Concert Hall at the House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach.

If your tastes run more toward theatre and stage, you're in luck. The spring run of The Color Purple will end this weekend with two performances Saturday (May 4th) and a matinee Sunday (May 5th) at the Theatre of the Republic in old town Conway. Click for details.

Take a nostalgic trip down memory lane and celebrate the many popular hit songs of the Four Season with HOT JERSEY NIGHTS at the Palace Theatre. This first-class show is on the showcard for the full month of May. See details online.

Don't forget... this weekend brings Cinco de Mayo, too! There will be celebrations, parties and fun with special events at many of the local clubs and restaurants, including Senor Frogs and Fiesta del Burro Loco.

The weekend of May 11th marks the return of MayFest on Main. The 8th annual festival on North Myrtle Beach's Main Street will feature arts & crafts, a community stage with lots of young local talent, a fun kids' zone and plenty of tasty festival treats. There will be music throughout the day with concerts on the main stage by John Waite and by the Little River Band. The festival runs from 10 am to 6 pm and is a FREE family-friendly event.

PLAY BALL! Our local "Boys of Summer", the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, are the Class A team for the Texas Rangers and their top-ranked ball park is the perfect place to enjoy a evening game or a Sunday afternoon of baseball. The best seats in the house are less than $15 and the next home stands are from May 7th-13th and May 21st-26th. See you there!

Taking the Perfect North Myrtle Beach Vacation

Taking the Perfect North Myrtle Beach Vacation.

A vacation should be relaxing and fun! It's a time to share with your family and friends while you leave your "real life" behind. To ensure you have the vacation of your dreams, try these tips and tricks. Your vacation is sure to be fantastic and after it's over, you'll be counting the days until your next beach trip to North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina!

RESEARCH - Take the time to research your destination. While checking the weather is a MUST, you can't predict what it will do. Be sure you have plenty of activity choices in case of "less than perfect" weather so no one is disappointed. Check out these great options for your North Myrtle Beach vacation.

PICKING THE PERFECT LOCATION - When planning your beach vacation, where you stay is very important...whether it's oceanfront or within a short walking distance. Your location can be key to a great vacation.

EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A SAY - Let everyone in your family or group give their opinion of things and activities they would like to do at the vacation destination. When everyone contributes ideas, the chances of fun are even better. Remember - one person can't or shouldn't do it all. Make it a group effort.

COUPON BOOKS - When you arrive at your hotel, condo, or beach house, ask the friendly check-in staff for a coupon book. You can find some great ideas with money saving deals.

SUNSCREEN - Avoid sunburns. It doesn't matter if you think you already have a good base tan or claim you never burn. Don't overdo it - especially the first day. Have plenty of sunscreen with the proper SPF to protect your skin from UV RAYS. You want to look sun kissed - not sun poisoned.

BABY POWDER - For those who dislike having sand on your feet when you leave the beach, do as locals do.  Keep a big bottle of baby powder in your beach bag. Once you're ready to pack it up, put some baby powder on your feet or wherever you have sand and it magically wipes away from your body. It's amazing!

There are lots of things that go into planning and taking the ideal beach vacation. These are just a few of the things we encourage you to think about. Once you're here, leave your worries behind, enjoy the sunshine and escape to your happy place.

Check out this great video and start planning your dream vacation today!

It's Cool to Keep it Clean!

Low-Impact Beach Vacationing is Great for the Environment and Everyone.

That's right... it's very cool to NOT leave your mark on the beach. Keeping our wonderful beach clean and beautiful takes a lot of effort from everybody. The City of North Myrtle Beach does an excellent job of raking and cleaning the beach early every morning so you and your family can enjoy playing and relaxing by the surf. Receptacles are conveniently placed every few hundred yards near the dune line so there's no excuse for leaving trash on the beach.

Please take a few minutes before you leave the beach each day to make sure you're not leaving any water bottles, beverage cans, or other trash behind. Enjoy those tasty, frozen treats you purchase from the beach vendors but please don't leave the containers and plastic spoons on the sand when you leave. Make the short stroll and drop it all in the nearby trash can. Your effort will make a difference and is truly appreciated. It may even set an example for those around you, too!

The City has a few newer regulations to make your beach time better and safer. Due to the increased use of canopies, tents and other large shading devices on the beach, new rules are in place to prevent them from interfering with public safety and emergency rescue personnel from having swift access to people who may need assistance on the beach or in the water. Shading devices may not be set up on the beach before 8 AM and must be removed from the beach by 7 PM daily. Detailed information can be found online.

Beach walks are some of the most pleasant ways to unwind and exercise. In the summer, you'll often see me and an amazing number of families, couples and singles out enjoying a stroll by the ocean... especially in the evening when it's cooler. Make some time and take a walk - relax and listen to the surf, check out the moon, stars and planets.

Life's a beach... stay cool.

Fireworks, Fun and the Fourth of July

Celebrate Independence Day in North Myrtle Beach!

The Week of the Fourth is always a fantastic time at the beach with festivals, parades, concerts and a night sky streaming with fiery rockets, booming starbursts and sparkling showers. We hope you're able to join us at the beach for the excitement and fun. Some favorites that our friendly folks at CENTURY 21 Thomas Beach Vacations suggest include these:

19th Annual North Myrtle Beach Fireworks Spectacular - blasts off from the Cherry Grove Pier at 3500 North Ocean Boulevard starting at 9:30 pm. It's a popular show so we suggest you hit the beach well before the first rocket's red glare. Bring a beach chair, a cooler with snacks and beverages, settle in and enjoy the pyrotechnic celebration. BTW... you can also view the fireworks from the porches and balconies of many Cherry Grove vacation rental homes and condos of Century 21 Thomas Beach Vacations.

Festivities include live music by Parrot Party (a Jimmy Buffett cover band, of course!), raffles, crafts, festival treats and a super fireworks show (begins shortly after 9 pm).

Southside Fourth of July - is at the Pier in Surfside Beach from 6 to 10 pm with live entertainment, free ice cream, concessions and fireworks (9:30 start). Bring a beach chair and have a blast!

Broadway at the Beach's BIG TIME Fourth - includes the Whacker Barrel street percussion show, live music at Celebrity Square by the Andrew Thielen Big Band, strolling entertainers from Le Grand Cirque, fun with the Bryan Dangerous Comedy Show, and a fireworks extravaganza over Lake Broadway beginning at 10 pm.

Salute from the Shore - 4th of July Military Flyover of the SC coast gives you a chance to honor our armed forces as you salute the flyover by four F-16s of the 79th "Flying Tigers" Fighter Squadron. The flyover starts at the NC state line at 1 pm and continues south, ending at Hilton Head Island at 1:30. For the Grand Strand area, we suggest being on the beach before 1 pm. Details can be found online at www.SalutefromtheShore.org.
